CH-20 - The Falls

The Falls Meeting House was built in 1872 by the Presbyterian Church in rural Nova Scotia. It is a grand church with impressive proportions and detail.

Renovators Resource Inc. will provide a complete dismantling service for The Falls, readying it for transport and re-erection on a location of your choosing.

Some historical significance of The Falls is noted in church documents:

"While most of the first settlers of Colchester County were of Lowland Scot origin, the area comprised of Earltown, The Falls was settled by Highland Scots who emigrated during the Highland clearances and came here from Pictou. Farming was a mainstay of the community with grist mills nearby. Water driven sawmills on the nearby Matheson Brook and at The Falls, made this a centre for preparing lumber for the thriving shipbuilding industry in Tatamagouche.

The Earltown church was the first in the area to have a minister and, since it was a sin to ride a horse on Sunday, worshippers from The Falls walked seven miles to church in Earltown. As their own community grew, a separate preaching district was formed and the large meeting house built in 1872. The Falls meeting house typifies the most popular architectural style used for the Presbyterian church buildings in rural Pictou County, from 1850 to 1880. It reflects also the cultural ties between the people of Earltown area and Pictou County. The building is unique because of its large size and strong entrance effect of the decorated windows extending the height of the doors."
